Description

This project aims to analyze the divergence between perceptual and lexical abilities in adult non-native (L2) speech learning. Previous studies suggest that, even in advanced speakers, lexical representations are not phonetically detailed, which can lead to pronunciation difficulties and less intelligible communication.

In this project, different training methods — meaning-focused and form-focused — will be explored as potential ways to bridge the gap between perceptual and lexical abilities in L2 speech learning. Furthermore, the interaction between these training methods and individual differences in cognitive abilities, such as auditory perception and working memory, will be investigated. Understanding this interaction is essential, as learners with different cognitive profiles may benefit from differentiated and personalized teaching strategies.

The project will focus on two typologically distinct languages, Portuguese and Mandarin, which will allow for the analysis of both phonemic (segmental) and tonal (suprasegmental) properties in perceptual and lexical learning. The expected results will contribute to a better understanding of the development of linguistic representations across the lifespan and will have practical implications for foreign language teaching, promoting pedagogical approaches tailored to learners’ cognitive characteristics.
