Description
“The project is an investigation into the grammatical category of case in a (broad) comparative perspective. The lack of a full understanding of such a crucial grammatical category in formal terms calls into question the interpretation of a number of linguistic structures, and ultimately of the overall architecture of language.
The project will delve into specific phenomena such as the following:
a) alignment patterns such as (person/tense/aspect) split ergativity, double oblique and tripartite systems, with a special focus on Indo-Iranian languages;
b) case-marking in ditransitive structures and Differential Object Marking (DOM);
c) case-stacking/case-compounding – layers of case and/or adpositions;
d) quirky case(s) in a cross-linguistic perspective;
e) case-marking on complement and adverbial clauses and on complementizers/subordinators;
f) the nature of linkers in the nominal domain;
g) the representation and processing of nominal class (gender), compared to other classifier language system(s) and case devices.
The project has recently been awarded an FCT ‘Investigação Exploratória’ grant which will give us the opportunity to participate in the design of online experiments with the aim of shedding light on the relation between case and agreement as assumed in current Minimalist research. Collaborators in this area include Paolo Lorusso and Mirko Grimaldi at CRIL, University of Lecce, and Sandra Villata at the University of Geneva.”
