Description
This project aims at studying the acquisition of syntactic dependencies by children acquiring European Portuguese from 3 to 10. We hope to reach the following goals:
(i) To study different types of syntactic dependency involving movement – A-chains (passives and unaccusatives) and A-bar chains (relative clauses, wh-questions and clefts);
(ii) To study different types of referential dependency, namely the comprehension of clitics, null and overt pronominal forms;
(iii) To assess relations between the development of referential dependencies and movement dependencies;
(iv) To assess the relevance of different categories for intervention phenomena in dependencies;
(v) To study the behavior of different populations with respect to similar syntactic dependencies;
(vi) To develop tools for the construction of a screening test for impairment in the development of syntactic knowledge.
