Description
The main objectives of the project were to investigate syntactic and semantic dependencies in subordinate clauses in Old Portuguese. With that purpose in mind, we aimed at describing the mechanisms of complex sentence’s formation, by characterizing complementation and adverbial structures; and, on the other hand, to determine the level of autonomy that exists between functional structure and the semantic value of the categories involved in the process. For that reason, we analysed the following phenomena:
8i) Non-finite subordination structures (gerunds, present participles, inflected and non-inflected infinitives);
(ii) Finite and non-finite complement structures;
(iii) Adverbial constructions;
(iv) Clefts.
