CDMOR – MorDigital Domain Classification
Description
The MorDigital Domain Classification (CDMOR) covers the areas of knowledge used, in the form of domain labels, in the lexicographic articles of António de Morais Silva’s “Diccionario da Lingua Portugueza” (1789; 1813; 1823). The occurrence of these labels, often abbreviated, restricts the scope of use of the underlying lexical units, identifying them as belonging to the lexicon of specialty areas. Thus, for example, the label “t. Anat.” in the article “accelerador” (Morais Silva, 1789, p. 14) indicates that it is a term from anatomy, occurring frequently in texts from this area of expertise.
CDMOR is modelled on the Simple Knowledge Organization System (SKOS), the W3C recommendation for classifications and other knowledge organization systems. The spellings of the preferred terms assigned to each domain are updated to facilitate searching and accessibility. The original spelling of the domains and their labels has also been preserved, appearing as alternative terms and labels in use in CDMOR, with an indication of their sources. Encyclopedic information on each domain is also included through scope notes taken from DBPedia. Finally, the definitions of the relevant articles for each domain are presented, covering all three editions of the dictionary. For example, in the Military domain we have the complete definitions of the adjective “military” and the name “militia” (which covers the military sciences as a field of knowledge).
This resource is being developed as part of the MorDigital project – Digitization of António de Morais Silva’s Diccionario da Lingua Portugueza (PTDC/LLT-LIN/6841/2020).
