The Vocabulary of Basic Terms for the Cataloguing of Costume – Portuguese Version

Description

The Portuguese language is now included in the Vocabulary of Basic Terms for the Cataloguing of Costume of the International Council of Museums (ICOM), a multilingual resource already available in German, Spanish, and French. This terminological resource covers three main subdomains: women’s garment, men’s garment, and children’s garment, in two varieties of Portuguese: European Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese. The Portuguese equivalents were largely validated based on historical, lexicographical, and literary sources, and in the final phase, fashion historians, curators, and museum conservators collaborated to validate the terms that posed the greatest challenges in identifying their precise designation.
