New article: “From meaning to sound: how word learning shapes non-native speech perception”
Susana Correia and Yuxin Ge, researchers from the LiFE – Formal and Experimental Linguistics group of CLUNL, collaborated on the article now published “From meaning to sound: how word learning shapes non-native speech perception”, co-authored with Gabriela Tavares (CLUL, University of Lisbon) and Patrick Rebuschat (LEAD Graduate School & Research Network, University of Tübingen).
This study shows that learning the meaning of new words can help learners better hear and tell apart unfamiliar sounds. Some sound differences remain tricky, but linking words to meaning gives beginners a powerful start.
