Yolanda Xavier obtained one of the 8 PhD research scholarships granted by FCT to Linguistics in the 2022 call.

Under the supervision of Susana Correia, Yolanda will develop the project “Foreign accent, linguistic stereotyping and their connection with social integration“. This proposal aims to understand if linguistic stereotyping is related to certain linguistic properties of foreign accent, namely the difficulty in producing nasal vowels and correctly distributing primary word stress by L1 Ukrainian learners of Portuguese as an L2. Additionally, this research aims to investigate whether this impacts further social integration by denying access to higher-level positions. The present PhD project can serve as a basis for pronunciation teaching for non-native learners, especially for those whose L1 is Ukrainian.
