Terminology and Beyond: a webinar series about terminology
Rute Costa and Federica Vezzani are the organizers of a webinar series dedicated to Terminology, with a monthly 1-hour webinar, starting this October.
The first one will have John Humbley and Lichao Zhu as invited speakers and will be held on 30th of October 2024, 6:00pm (Central Europe Time), under the theme “Neology in Terminology: Where do all the new terms come from?”
Abstract: This inaugural webinar aims at setting the stage for explorations in terminology… and beyond, focusing on new terms: how they come into being and how they can be identified. In the first part, emphasis will be placed on defining some of the basic concepts of both terminology and neology, the most important being: how do new terms come into being? A couple of hypotheses will be examined before addressing the issue of how to detect new terms as they appear. In the second part, a series of terminology and neology processing methods and tools, along with experimental results, will be presented (e.g., text analysis engines, open-source softwares, etc.). The benefits and precautions related to data processing technologies will also be discussed.
The webinar series titled “Terminology and Beyond”, jointly organised by the Linguistic Center of the NOVA University of Lisbon (CLUNL), Portugal, the Centro Studi in Terminologia Computazionale (CENTRICO), and the Department of Linguistics and Literary Studies (DISLL) of the University of Padova, Italy, aims to showcase the essential role of terminology across various scientific disciplines and subject fields. The goal is to provide a platform that gives voice to people from different backgrounds and cultures, facilitating debates.
